Madeira, a volcanic island with a subtropical climate, makes it a verdant and humid tourist destination close to home. A 3 hour flight from Paris, Madeira is nicknamed the pearl of the Atlantic. The flora is lush there because of the legendary mildness of the island which is located only 600 km from the Moroccan coast. The coast is jagged with volcanic reefs while the center of the island offers breathtaking panoramas from the top of its sharp peaks, including Pico do Arieiro, which culminates at 1,810 m. In addition to the vertiginous paths that connect the highest peaks, it is along the levadas, these characteristic irrigation canals of the island, that many hikes take place allowing you to discover the fauna and flora of Madeira, whose rate of endemism is important. There are 2150 km of marked trails in Madeira, enough to use pairs of shoes... Of the original laurisilva, only a part remains which covers 20% of the island and which is classified as a World Natural Heritage Site by Unesco. This forest is home to species such as til (Ocotea foetens) or laurel (Laurus novocanariensis) often immersed in fog and loved by the Madeira Kinglet.
